Vincent Ruijters, Selintas Selalu, 2024
Vincent Ruijters’ Selintas Selalu (2024) is a kinetic installation that examines identity, heritage and displacement through an interplay of light, shadow and fabric. Based on the artist’s research into his Chinese-Indonesian roots, the artwork captures the aesthetics of this hybrid culture by featuring traditional references to Chinese-Indonesian communities.Ruijters’ deeply personal exploration is realized in a vein-like steel structure from where strips of red fabric hang, dyed with a symbolic pigment from Lasem, Indonesia. The base borrows its petal shape from the kawung motif common in Javanese batik. Surrounding the centerpiece are standing lamps with spikes reminiscent of kembang kelapa decorations found in Betawi culture.
At the heart of the installation, a moving light bulb casts an immersive shadow play on the walls and floor, inviting viewers to contemplate how ancestral culture and migration ripple into the present, shaping our ever-changing identity.

Vincent Ruijters (b. 1988, the Netherlands)
Vincent Ruijters (b. 1988) is a Dutch contemporary artist who blurs the boundaries between personal and public spaces through large-scale spatial installations. With Dutch and Chinese-Indonesian ancestry, Ruijters explores how humans experience intimacy and identity, particularly across borders, and the ways in which our contemporary forms of interaction shape the two. His practice is heavily influenced by the Japanese Mono-ha art movement, which explores the expressive qualities of materials, and Relational Art, which prioritizes human connection in artworks.
During his PhD studies at the Tokyo University of the Arts, the artist began integrating tactile materials like fabric and wind in his works, culminating in a pivotal solo show Breathing IN/EX-terior at the Komagome SOKO, Tokyo in 2019. His recent group exhibitions include Nandur Srawung, Taman Budaya, Indonesia in 2024 and Roppongi Art Night, Tokyo in 2023.
