Aimed at investigating Lamki’s new body of work on the mountain range of Jebel Hafeet, currently on view at Tabari Art Space, the discussion aims to unpack the relationship between man and nature in the UAE’s urban and rural ecosystems. Lamki’s Sensu Lato exhibition was indeed inspired by the man-made constructions found on the UAE’s side of Jebel Hafeet, the mountain surrounding his hometown of Al Ain. Compared to the entirely natural Omani side, the UAE’s side encompasses street lights, roads, and hotel resorts. Making for a more vivid environment to observe and paint, Jebel Hafeet’s constructions were the starting point of Lamki’s artistic exploration.
In the interview published in Sensu Lato’s catalogue, the artist revealed that Jebel Hafeet is “witnessing all the other changes that are taking place not just in the UAE, but the whole world.” Expanding on the interview, Arni and Lamki will discuss ways in which man-made construction build a sense of belonging to a place. Delving into the natural pigments Lamki used in his painting process will reveal a new side of this exhibition to audiences, one that is closer to nature and brings forth the concept of place-making and “home.”
