“Sabkhas”, saline wetlands that are constantly shifting and tend to form stiff salt crusts at low sea levels, are the starting point for Wetland Lab, an award-winning research project first presented at the National Pavilion of the UAE at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2021.

Sabkhas are found all over the world, including in South America, Australia, China, and North Africa, as well as in the United Arab Emirates, where they make up 5 percent of the natural environment. The coastal sabkhas of Abu Dhabi, formed over seven thousand years through wind erosion, have been nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Host to rich biodiversity, sabkhas have multiple benefits for the larger environment. They are excellent carbon sinks. Mangroves that grow on top of sabkhas have been shown to sequestrate more CO2 emissions than tropical forests. The coastal sabkhas of the UAE can therefore be understood as natural barriers to ecological damage caused by the country’s rapid urban development.
Inspired by the formation of sabkhas and the excess brine residue from the UAE’s large-scale desalination operations, waiwai research and design agency developed an environmentally friendly salt-based material that can be used as an alternative to traditional Portland cement. Through collaboration with researchers and engineers at New York University Abu Dhabi, the American University of Sharjah, and the University of Tokyo, waiwai built a prototype made from recycled industrial waste brine. This new material relies on salt as a binding agent and crystallization derived from the complex mineralization process of the UAE’s sabkhas.
This present display is part of an ongoing research project conducted by waiwai research and design agency to promote the complexity of the UAE’s natural materials found in its coastal environments. Through the study of sabkhas, waiwai continues to discover great technological advances based on millennia-old mineral formations that can be applied to building sustainable architecture for a future vernacular.
絶えず変化し、低海面で硬い塩の殻を形成する傾向がある塩水湿地である “ Sabkhas “ サブカ” は、ヴェネツィア建築ビエンナーレの UAE のナショナル パビリオンで 2021年に最初に発表された受賞歴のある研究プロジェクトです。これが Wetland Lab (ウェットランド ラボ) の出発点です。
サブカは、南アメリカ、オーストラリア、中国、北アフリカ、アラブ首長国連邦を含む世界中に見られ、自然環境の 5% を占めています。 7,000 年以上にわたって風食によって形成されたアブダビの沿岸サブカは、ユネスコの世界遺産に登録されています。

Curated by Wael Al Awar and Kenichi Teramoto, Wetland is a research project first presented at the National Pavilion of the UAE at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2021. The pavilion was awarded the Golden Lion for the Best National Participation. Commissioned by the Salama Bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation and supported by the UAE Ministry of Youth and Culture, Wetland is a product of a collaborative effort between the co-curators and researchers at Amber Lab at New York University Abu Dhabi, the Obuchi Lab and Sato Lab at the University of Tokyo, and the Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences at American University of Sharjah. The exhibition also included photographs taken by New York–based Emirati artist Farah Al Qasimi, and it was accompanied by a publication dedicated to the study of sabkhas and their importance in global ecology and architecture, entitled The Anatomy of Sabkhas, written by Rashid and Ahmed Bin Shabib, co-edited by Wael Al Awar and Kenichi Teramoto, and with a contribution by Marina Tabassum.
ワイル アル アワルと寺本健一によりキュレーションされ、2021年ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレ国際建築展のUAE館で初めて発表、最優秀賞である Golden Lion（最優秀国別参加賞）を受賞した学際的リサーチプロジェクト。UAEのサブカ（sabkhas。塩田）に見られる塩と鉱物の生態系に着想を得て、UAEの海水淡水化プラントで作られる塩水から得られる環境に配慮したセメント代替品の研究を紹介。
「Wetland」は、サラマ・ビン・ハムダン・アル・ナヒヤーン財団の委託を受け、UAE青年文化省の支援、共同キュレーター、ワイワイ、ニューヨーク大学アブダビ校アンバーラボ、東京大学小渕研究室・佐藤研究室、シャルジャ・アメリカン大学生物・化学・環境科学科の研究者による協力により制作。また、ニューヨーク在住のUAEアーティスト、ファラ・アル・カシミの写真は、「Wetland」の一部として展示された。都市学者で研究者のラシッドとアーメド・ビン・シャビブによる、サブカの研究と世界の生態系と建築におけるその重要性に焦点を当てた書籍「The Anatomy of Sabkhas」も開催を機に出版されています。

waiwai is an architectural, landscape, urban, interior, and graphic design studio with offices in Dubai and Tokyo.
