For this project, the collective found an abandoned onsen bath in Atami, on a property of a demolished house. The bath is the only undemolished remains of the property and used to belong to the house’s maid. Taking the bath as the point of departure, GROUP refurbished it, thinking of ways to give it a new life.
For this exhibition, GROUP is presenting a three-part installation at HOTEL ACAO ANNEX’s 1F onsen bath: a video projection of their research process in the changing room, a larger projection of 浴室の手入れ / Repair of a Bathroom film in the shower room, and an installation of found materials in the outdoor onsen bath. The audience is invited to step into this onsen bath and discover GROUP’s video installation, in-situ.
The first video showcases GROUP’s research at the abandoned onsen’s site: we see recordings of their research, architectural design process, as well as refurbishing and maintenance work, including cutting wild grass around the bath structure.
Directed by GROUP, shot by Yui Kiyohara, with an original soundtrack by composer Yuya Haryu. Showing a day in the life of the house’s maid, we see a female actress go through the different corridors of the house. Even though it is now demolished, the video records the pathways of the original house floor plan. Thanks to their architectural research, GROUP reconstituted the house’s floor plan: from the kitchen to living rooms and bedrooms, the maid goes about her work day, cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the house. The onsen bath is the only remaining structure, and for this installation, GROUP cleaned it and poured warm water into it; celebrating its presence and stillness. The soundtrack by Yuya Haryu is inspired by the maid’s rōdō uta work song, in the spirit of songs traditionally sung by workers in Japan, especially manual laborers, to keep their high spirits and motivation throughout their day.
As such, 浴室の手入れ / Repair of a Bathroom, GROUP celebrates the labor that made Atami’s onsen culture famous throughout Japan. Indeed, for over a thousand years, Atami has been celebrated for its natural hot springs water, thanks to its proximity to volcanoes and the ocean. Atami has been a popular resort destination, and often the place chosen by Tokyo’s elites for their second homes, and retreat from urban life. Many famous houses and ryokans have been built throughout Atami, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries, to host wealthy families and couples for their vacations, including high-ranked political figures. Atami’s retreat culture might be based on its extraordinary natural resources, but it also relies on hospitality: house staff members including maids and maintenance workers, are essential to the smooth running of the city’s hotels and private homes. They should not be forgotten, as this project showcases.
For the third part of the installation, the audience is invited to step outside in HOTEL ACAO ANNEX’s outdoor onsen. Ceramic tiles from the maid’s onsen have been collected and placed throughout the bath, bringing found objects from one abandoned locality to another. This exchange process is part of GROUP’s interdisciplinary practice combining architecture and art, investigating politics and urban history throughout different cities in Japan. Water here plays an important role in the stored memory of abandoned spaces. From the water fluidity emerges the fluidity of memory and past lives.
“浴室の手入れ / Repair of a Bathroom” は建築集団 GROUP によるビデオ作品です。女中部屋の温泉風呂を元の形に戻す行為で、大変な労働の成果をねぎらう、新たな試みを提案します。
このプロジェクトのために、GROUP は、熱海の解体された家屋の敷地内に放棄された温泉浴場を見つけました。 浴室は、建物の唯一の取り壊されていない残跡であり、その家の女中風呂でした。この風呂を出発点に、新たな命を吹き込む方法を考えてリノベーションしました。
この展覧会のために、GROUP は HOTEL ACAO ANNEX の 1 階の温泉浴場で 3 部構成のインスタレーションを発表します。脱衣場での研究プロセスのビデオ プロジェクション、シャワー ルームでの “浴室の手入れ / Repair of a Bathroom” の大型プロジェクション、 露天風呂には出土品のインスタレーションをしました。 観客はこの温泉に足を踏み入れ、その場で GROUP によるビデオ インスタレーションの発見に導かれます。
最初のビデオは、放棄された温泉跡地での GROUP の研究を紹介しています。彼らの研究、建築設計プロセス、浴室構造の周りの野草の伐採を含む改修とメンテナンス作業の記録を見ることができます。
2 番目の部屋に入ると、GROUP が監督し、波立裕矢によるサウンドトラックと共に、清原惟が撮影した詩的な画像が始まります。家の女中の１日の生活が映し出され、女性俳優が家のさまざまな廊下を通り抜けるのが見えます。現在は解体されていますが、ビデオは元の家の間取り図の経路を記録しています。建築調査のおかげで、GROUP は家の間取り図を再構成しました。台所から、居間、寝室まで、女中は家の仕事、料理、掃除などの世話をします。現存する唯一の構造物である温泉風呂を GROUP が清掃し、湯を入れました。そしてその存在と静けさを賛美します。波立裕矢のサウンドトラックは、女中の 労働歌 にインスパイアされています。この唄は、日本の色々な労働者、特に肉体労働者が、一日を通して、精神と意欲を維持するため、歌われていました。
このように、“浴室の手入れ/ Repair of a Bathroom” において GROUPは、熱海の温泉文化を全国に広めた功績を讃えます。 承知のように、千年以上にわたり、熱海は火山と海に近接しているため、天然の温泉水で有名です。 熱海は人気のリゾート地であり、東京のエリートが別荘地として、都会の生活から逃れる場所として選ぶことがよくあります。 多くの有名な家屋や旅館が、特に 19 世紀と 20 世紀に熱海全体に建設され、高位の政治家を含む裕福な家族やカップルが休暇を過ごすために訪れてきました。 熱海の保養地文化は、その並外れた天然資源に基づいているかもしれませんが、ホスピタリティ(おもてなし)にも依存しています。女中、仲居、番頭そして旅館業に関わる従業員の役割は、市内のホテルや個人の家の円滑な運営に不可欠です。 このプロジェクトが示すように、彼らを忘れることはできません。
インスタレーションの第 3 部では、HOTEL ACAO ANNEX の露天風呂に観客を招待します。 女中風呂から浴室タイルが集められ、風呂場全体に配置され、ある放棄された地域から別の場所へと、発見されたオブジェが運ばれました。 この交換プロセスは、建築とアートを組み合わせ、 日本のさまざまな都市の政治と歴史を調査した GROUP の学際的な実践の一部です。 ここに注がれた湯は、放棄された空間の保存された記憶において重要な役割を果たしています。 水の流動性から記憶と過去の生活の流動性が現れます。

GROUP is architectural collective made of members Gaku Inoue, Takahiro Omura, Naoki Saito, Kumiko Natsuda, and Ken Akatsuka. Some of GROUP members previously worked at Junya Ishigami + Associates. Positioning architectural projects as places for people with different specialties to temporarily and continuously collaborate, GROUP develops activities that focus on the interrelationships of architecture, art, politics, labor, and urban history.
